Her face has become one of the most recognizable in the world for all of the wrong reasons. Madeleine McCann (born May 12th, 2003) disappeared from her bed while on vacation with her parents in Portugal. The UK family was staying at the Praia de Luz resort when, on the evening of May 3rd, 2007, Madeleine’s mother discovered her daughter was missing.
After that fateful day, what followed were a string of investigations, numerous questions, and conspiracy theories. The most significant of these investigations has been conducted by Scotland Yard who opened is own inquiry, Operation Grange, into the mystery ever since 2011. However, up until recently, the police could abandon the £12 million investigation on the grounds that no significant leads or breakthroughs have been formulated for quite some time.
Despite this fact, Operation Grange was given £150,000 this past October to extend the investigation to the end of this March. It is also believed that the Metropolitan Police plan to add an extra £300,000 to that funding in order to keep going until March 2020.
Although this horror story seems to have no definitive answer in sight and the most profound investigation into McCann’s disappearance is nearing its end, people will hopefully continue the fight for understanding in their own way(s). If anyone is interested in learning more about Madeleine’s case, Netflix recently released a documentary series about the incident called The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann on March 15th of this year.
The greatest honor we can do for this family is to keep Madeleine in our hearts and minds. Hopefully, the more recent discoveries are out there to the public, the more thought we can put into solving this mystery once and for all.
