For birthdays with a zero in them, it’s become something of a rite of passage to celebrate them with a holiday that you’ll always remember.
One destination that features on many people’s lists of must-go places is the Caribbean and if that’s where you’re considering, here’s why Barbados is the perfect island to mark the big occasion.
No one wants to splash out on a big birthday holiday to have it ruined by bad weather. So, if you are looking for somewhere where the weather is always warm and the rain never lasts long, then Barbados is the place to go. You’ll never get less than eight hours of sunshine a day and even in winter, temperatures seldom drop below 26°C, making it ideal for getting out on the beach or exploring the island’s amazing places.
Dinner party delights
You can’t have a big birthday without having a bit of a do, and in Barbados, you can do it in style. Along the west coast, you’ll find some of the most stylish restaurants serving up dishes that are to die for. One of the island’s most fabled haunts, and popular with some of Hollywood’s famous stars, is the aptly named The Cliff, which is perched above the Caribbean and offers internationally renowned menus. Book well before departing to guarantee a table.
Alternatively, eat out at the exquisite Fusion Rooftop in Holetown, where your dinner is served on the trés chic, firepit-warmed rooftop terrace, or at the sensational Cin Cin, the cosy Champers or the terrific The Tides. Amongst these, you’ll find mouth-watering Asian, Fusion, French and traditional Bajan dishes to feast upon.
Birthday treats should include a birthday treatment or two, and Barbados has some of the plushest places to get thoroughly pampered. So, ease those jet lag aches, soak away the stress and get your body and mind in the right place to enjoy your holiday. The best spas are to be found around the south and west coasts. Check out Atera, The Healing Power of Touch, Baje, Schotherapy and the sumptuous Singita Wellness Centre at Mullins Beach.
Boogie the night away
If you’re looking for somewhere to party for your birthday, there are plenty of excellent places for a dance and a drink. The Nikki Beach Club, near Speightstown, is an elegant, upmarket nightclub, right on the seafront, which offers live music and DJ sets to boogie to and a chill zone where you can slip your shoes off, rest your dancing feet, and have a relaxing drink.
Another great night spot is the lively Boatyard, in Carlisle Bay – a venue that puts on a variety of musical events, including DJs and live bands, and serves some great food if all that dancing works up an appetite. You should also pay a visit to the Red Door Lounge in Holetown, whose open-plan lounge bar hosts DJs and bands and provides just the right setting for dancing the night away.
Before you head off for a meal or night on the town, make sure you spend some of your daytimes experiencing all that this amazing island has to offer – and for a small island, there’s an awful lot to see and do. There are submarine and catamaran tours, reef and shipwreck diving, island Jeep safaris, a world heritage site, places of natural beauty, galleries, museums, world-class shopping, championship-standard golf courses and of course, more beautiful beaches than you could possibly visit during a single visit.
