Whether you find secret passages creepy or exciting, this flat’s unconventional back door passage will take you by surprise.

Most of us will be able to empathise with seeing the unexpected when viewing prospective homes, whether that’s questionable wallpaper choices, interesting toilets, or a weird basement. But actor and Twitter-user Jamie Wilkes was lost for words this week when shown the back door of a flat he was viewing.

In a video shared on his Twitter account, Wilkes can be seen lifting up a kitchen worktop to reveal a hidden passageway with steps leading to the backdoor.

Coincidentally, Jamie Wilson is currently playing the mysterious Pale-Faced Man in the BBC’s Sunday evening His Dark Materials adaptation.

Another user replied with his own kitchen secret, opening an unsuspecting cupboard to reveal a set of stairs down to the cellar.

Others speculated how unnerving having a hidden passageway would be, imagining killers creeping up into their home. However, this user perhaps raised the most terrifying possibility: “What if someone decides to come through the back door while you’re trying to enjoy Christmas dinner and knocks all the Mac n cheese over onto the floor?”

One Twitter user enquired whether the flat was located in London, as he had seen many such passageways like this in London property.

If this has made you more alert to potential secret doors killer might spring from, then check out this spot the difference the CIA is using to challenge spies.
