After famously leaving NFL sports this past February, Tom Brady recently announced his return to the game––just one day after a man paid $500,000 for Brady’s last touchdown ball.
On the evening of March 12, the football that Tom Brady scored his last touchdown with sold for $518,628 with Lelands Auctions. Mere hours later, Tom Brady announced that he was un-retiring from the sport. This announcement means the $500K “final TD ball” will no longer be Brady’s final TD ball.
This past June, Lelands Auctions also sold the first football that Tom Brady ever scored a touchdown with. This ball sold for a whopping $428,841.
On Twitter, Brady stunned fans by writing “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now.”
In early February, Brady claimed he was retiring in order to spending more time with his family. Brady’s tweet continues by explaining “I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG.”
Brady’s sign off––“LFG”––has become a calling card for Brady fans as they takeover Twitter to express their enthusiasm for Brady’s return.
Since Tom Brady signed on with the Buccaneer’s in March of 2020, Tampa Bay has enjoyed unparalleled success, winning 29 out of the 39 games they played in the past two years. The Buccaneers also took home the 2021 Super Bowl Super Bowl LV championship title.
“We are thrilled that Tom has decided to come back this season,” writes General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jason Licht, taking to Twitter to announce his excitement regarding Brady’s return, “Tom is the greatest quarterback of all time who is still playing at an elite level.”
Buccaneer’s head coach Bruce Arians seemed to confront common criticisms regarding Brady’s age and experience, writing ”Tom Brady loves to play football as much as anyone I have ever been around. He is still playing at a championship level and was as productive as anyone in the league last season. We are ecstatic that he decided to continue playing and working toward winning another championship”
The Buccaneers didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this past year after losing to the Los Angeles Rams in January. Brady’s initial announcement of his retirement came only a few days later. On February 13, the day of the 2022 Super Bowl, Brady both amused and sparked the suspicions of Twitter fans when he posted a screenshot of his phone reminder to tune into the game that afternoon.
Before playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tom Brady began and continued his illustrious football career with the New England Patriots. With the Patriots, he won six Super Bowl championships. His seventh Super Bowl win with the Buccaneer’s a year ago cemented his position as the most decorated player in all of NFL history.
In addition to his championship wins, Brady also boasts the most passing yards (84,520) and the most touchdown passes (624) in NFL history.
