One surprised Tik Tok user recently discovered a German advert focused on combating food poverty in the US, leaving Americans highly confused.
Teresa Morcho (@teresamorcho) discovered the advert after replying to another user’s comment which said ‘ Germany is actually doing videos to help feed America’. After sharing her bizarre findings on Tiki Tok amassing over seven million views and thousands of comments.
The German advert begins with a young girl sitting on a front stop clutching a teddy. The advert describes her as living ‘ with little access to nutritional food’. The German narrator then continues by saying this could lead to health conditions like heart disease and diabetes resulting in a ‘costly dependence’ on the government. The final and most puzzling line states that America ‘needs Germany’s help.’
During the 2020 pandemic, more than 60 million people used food banks and other community schemes to feed themselves during hardship. In the past developed countries like the UK and the US have created adverts asking people to donate to developing countries. However, Germany asking its citizens to support America is certainly a new one.
After digging a bit deeper it turns out that the advert was actually a satire. It was developed by Great Nations Eat, a campaign created by Share Our Strength in 2015.
The original purpose was to raise awareness about America’s food issues but not to raise any money.
Billy Shore the non-profits CEO and Founder told Fast Company: ‘This was really to try to think a little more disruptively to get people’s attention, to go right to the heart of the issue that people are not aware hunger is a problem in the United States’
This once again proves you shouldn’t believe everything you read or rather see on Tik Tok without checking the facts.
