Is there anything better than sitting down to watch your favorite sports team or a movie with a fresh pizza that was delivered right to your door? Yes. Sitting down to watch your favorite things with a fresh, homemade pepperoni pizza that you created all on your own!
Why spend money to have somebody make your pizza with cheaper and less desirable ingredients? Even if it is made properly, delivery pizza is not as fresh, and you don’t know the quality of the ingredients. There’s nothing worse than waiting in anticipation for your pizza, only to be disappointed in the results. The pepperoni is sticking to the top of the box, none of the slices are in proper formation, and the worst part is that its cold.If you call and complain, you’ll just have to wait another 30 mins for a pizza that is not even guaranteed to be better than the first one.
The best way to avoid this problem? Make your own at your house! It’s fun, really easy, and if you have a family it’s a great bonding experience for everyone! Making a homemade pizza can also be cheaper than paying for delivery, so you’ll save money too. At home, you can make your pizza healthier, load on toppings without paying extra, and make your pizza to your exact tastes. With just a few simple steps and creativity, you too can feel like a master pizza chef!
Homemade Pepperoni Pizza Recipe
When you’re making a pizza at home, you can choose how much effort you put in. For a pizza totally from scratch, homemade dough is delicious and fun to make! There are also plenty of pre-made dough options at most grocery stores, however. You may also decide to make your own pizza sauce, or go with store-bought sauce for an easy-to-assemble pizza.
The Dough Ingredients
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp of white vinegar
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 3 1/2 -4 cups of bread flour
Arguably the most important aspect of the entire pizza is the dough. Without a strong and tasteful dough, your mountain of cheese, sauce and pepperoni will just turn to a pile of mush.
Making it is simple and easy. First take the yeast, sugar, and half a cup of warm water and throw it all in a mixing bowl. Whisk it around until the yeast has fully dissolved. Let that sit for a few mins before adding the rest of the warm water, salt, vinegar and olive oil. Attach the whisker to the mixer and set the speed to low. As it is getting all mixed up, gradually add 1 ¾ cups of flour until it is fully mixed together.
Next thing you want to do is attach the dough hook to your mixer. Add the remaining flour slowly as the mixing speed is set to medium low. It should take roughly 5-7 mins for everything to combine together. Once the dough is smooth and stretchy with a slight stickiness to it, cover the bowl and let it rest until it doubles. This waiting period is roughly 1 ½ hours which is more than enough time to get started on the perfect sauce!
The Sauce Ingredients
- 32 oz. can crushed tomatoes
- 2 tsp. granulated white sugar
- 3 tsp. dried oregano flakes
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
- 2 Tbsp. minced fresh basil
- Dash extra virgin oil
Take a saucepan and put all the ingredients except for the oregano and basil in it. Let it simmer on a low heat for 15-20 minutes while stirring sporadically. Add oregano and basil to the mixture and continue to let it simmer as you stir it for another 5 mins. Taste the sauce as well so it fits your pallet exactly the way you want it. This is the time to make your own personal minor adjustments. Need more salt? Add it! More sugar? Why not?! This is your personal pizza and you control how it tastes. Once the sauce is ready, let it cool to room temperature before using it on the pizza.
Assembling The Pizza
The dough has risen, the sauce is cooled, it’s time to put it all together.
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. While you wait for it to heat up, place a piece of parchment paper on the counter and sprinkle it with flour. Take about 16 oz of your dough and begin to roll it out to 13 inches in diameter. With the rest of the dough, put it in a plastic bag so you can make more later but nothing is stopping you from making multiple pizzas! As you roll it out, be sure to make a crust around the edge of the pie.
Use a fork to poke the dough all on the inside of the pie. Make sure you’re careful not to puncture through the dough, you just want to make a slight indent. In a separate bowl, mix about a tsp of olive oil and crushed garlic. Embrace your inner Picasso and lightly brush the oil all over the dough as if you are painting your own masterpiece.
You then want to spread your sauce on the pie evenly but be careful not to put any on the rim. Again, this is your pizza so use as much as you want. Make the sauce nice and think if you love saucy pizza or use it sparingly if you want just enough for a bit of flavor, it’s all up to your own discretion
Put as much mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce as you like, but you need to make sure it’s evenly spread out. Add your favorite brand of pepperoni and have fun with it. You can make smiley faces, initials, favorite team logo, or anything you like! Be creative!
Once the oven is up to temperature, place your pizza on a pizza cooking tray and let it cook for 15-20 mins. Your crust should turn golden brown and have a nice crisp to it.
Enjoy Your Homemade Pepperoni Pizza
As soon as it’s cooked, remove the pizza from the oven and add a bit of oregano or garlic powder for an extra flavor kick. Let the pizza sit for a few minutes to cool down a bit before slicing it up and serving it to everyone.
Whether you’re sitting in your favorite spot on the couch or at the dinner table, it’s time to look around and see the magic you just created. Everyone is enjoying the pizza that you made and it’s now time to indulge in your own creation and stuff your face with tasteful goodness!
