The legalization of the drug for recreational purposes occurred after years of failed attempts to make marijuana available across the state.
New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy tweeted:
“We did it, New Jersey!
Public Question #1 to legalize adult-use marijuana passed overwhelmingly tonight, a huge step forward for racial and social justice and our economy.”

AP projected the results voting in favor of recreational marijuana use for adults over the age of 21. However, a bill still needs to be passed to set regulations on the drug.
New Jersey is set to become the twelfth state to legalize recreational marijuana, thus putting pressure on both New York and Pennsylvania.
The president of the New Jersey CanaBisiness Association, Scott Rudder, explained to NJ.com:
“Legalization is the result of years hard work from a diverse group of individuals and communities.”
