A huge nudist festival is being planned to go ahead in Mexico, despite the fact that the world is facing a deadly pandemic.
Playa Zipolite (beach of the dead) has hosted numerous nudist gatherings over the past five years as thousands of festival-goers have flocked to attend the Festival Nudista Zipolite. Despite being in the midst of a global pandemic, this year is no different, with the festival set to commence over the first weekend of February.
The festival takes place on the country’s first and only legal beach, organised by Federación Nudista de México. According to reports, Zipolite officials have agreed to hold the festival in accordance with the country’s COVID-19 protocols.
Mexico has recorded more than 1.4 million cases of COVID-19 and over 130,000 Covid-related deaths in the past year. In spite of this, Benjamín Martínez López, a representative of Bienes Comunales, has said that organisers and the Health Secretariat of San Pedro Pochutla have confirmed that the event is fine to go ahead.
López believes that the nudist festival will provide an opportunity for Zipolite to recoup some of the money it has lost as a result of the pandemic.
As we are in the midst of a pandemic, adverts for Festival Nudista Zipolita 2021 have urged visitors to take extra precautions if planning to attend. One advert tells prospective beach-goers: “If you have airline and hotel reservations, bring your masks and sanitising items with you or if you still don’t have reservations, we invite you to stay home.”
Wow. No mandatory temperature checks, or requirements for previous negative COVID-19 tests? Are the masks even mandatory to attend the event? You’d think that in a semi-apocalyptic viral outbreak that people would prioritise saving lives, but instead, we have nudist beach gatherings. Entirely essential.
