Eric Garcetti, the Los Angeles Mayor has pledged to cut the LAPD Funding by $100-$150 million dollars as a part of a series of reform throughout the city and to return the money to the Black communities.
Ever since the public murder of George Floyd, protests and riots have peaked through the roof, across America. George Floyd’s death falls within the 300-year-old pattern of cruel racial discrimination and acts of hatred towards Black people.
As a result, many organizations and city governments are trying to make changes. During the press conference of June 3, Mayor Garcetti referred to the death of George Floyd: “Committed to making this moment not just a moment” and promised to reinvest into the Black communities.
“Prejudice can never be a part of police work” and as such Garcetti is planning on diverting funds that were supposed to go to the police and instead, using them to reinvest into the Black communities and communities of color.
There will be a total of $250 million budget cuts across the board, $100 to $150 million of which will be cut from the Los Angeles Police Department Budget. Garcetti has got a lot of Backlash from the LAPD union and right-wing media for cutting the LAPD funding.
However, one little detail which is often times kept out of the news is that the proposed budget cut of $100-$150 million from the LAPD budget came after the announcement to increase the LAPD budget by $1.189 billion for the 2020-2021 period.
