Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival Offer’s Insane Cinema Hiatus

7 days of isolation with nothing but the endless sea and 60 movies…

Okay, so it’s still COVID times, yada yada yada. I don’t need to remind you of what’s been right in front of you for almost a year now. The one thing I think we’ve all endured more than anything though is the social isolation.

It would seem fitting that everyone would be chomping at the bit to get out and do something normal. But, even so, other’s truly do enjoy their time alone.

Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival has announced an interesting prize. One lucky film fanatic will be chosen to spend a week on an island living in a lighthouse with nothing to do but watch movies. And when I say nothing else to do I mean it. No phones or computers aloud.

I know we all like to think we could go a week without our phones, but can we? I know whenever I forget my phone at home I suddenly get a rush of panic. So, seven days without access to the rest of the world? Either the best or worst week of your life.

So we did the producers want to subject just one person to this experiment? The Artistic Director, Jonas Holmberg, gave a little insight behind the inspiration of this once-in-a-life-time cinema creation.

We are all watching films in isolation now and that changes our relationship with movies, we have seen new types of films resonate in this lockdown period, and films take on a different meaning. A scene where people hug a stranger feels very different in a moment when you can’t do that yourself.

So obviously there’s a screening process to weed out the people who would potentially go insane. And when all the interviewing is over one single individual will be exposed to a screening experience that hundreds if not thousands would usually experience together.

There will be 60 films available, and the festival will take place Jan 29th through February 8th.

I don’t know when things will go back to normal. But movies have been an escape for people since they were first invented– and hopefully this will be no different for the lucky winner.

Another once-in-a-life-time experience! Atlantic City is auctioning off the chance to destroy Trump’s old casino tower. Here’s your chance to take out your anger on the shit show that was the last four years of America’s presidency.
