James Bond will never go out of style, will he? Started in 1962, the James Bond film franchise is one of the longest continually-running movie series in history. And there doesn’t seem to be any sign of slowing down. Idris Elba is set to play Bond in an upcoming film.
But let’s first rewind to 2015. That year, Anthony Horowitz (author of the latest Bond book), said that Elba was “too street” to play the spy. Don’t feel too bad. After that comment, even Elba himself said that there was “no chance” he would ever play 007.
Now come back to 2018. Producers for an upcoming Bond film are eyeing Elba for the famed protagonist.
The Independent recently reported:
“Director Antoine Fuqua revealed the details of a conversation with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, in which she said “it is time” for a non-white actor to take the iconic role. Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who’s certain the progressive move “will happen eventually”, with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role.
What’s interesting, however, is that when it comes to the topic of Bond, Elba’s response is often that no one is really considering him for the role. This certainly changes things.”
So basically the beef with Elba as Bond is either that he’s black or that he’s too old. Blah blah. Elba is not only one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, but he could blow any previous Bond portrayal out of the park if (and when) he takes on the role. He would make an absolutely perfect James Bond…plus he’s already got the style part down.
Still unconvinced? Just look at Liam Neeson. The dude is still running around rescuing hostages and he’s way older than Elba. Honestly, all you really need to play 007 is some swagger and badass fighting moves and you’re set. Set your sights on 2019 for the next Bond movie.
But before Elba suits up, do you think we could get Daniel Craig to do one more Bond film?
