Davion Blessing, better known as Dave Blunts, is a 23-year-old rapper hailing from Davenport, Iowa. Blunts began making music in 2018 and eventually started gaining traction after posting his music on TikTok.
With around half a million monthly listeners on Spotify, Blunts is best known for his song “The Cup.” In the song, he details his love for Lean, stating that “[he] can’t put down the cup.” Blunt’s fixation on lean and drugs can also be seen in many of his other songs, such as Purple Stuff, 10 Percs, and FAMILY MATTERS.
Another topic prevalent in Blunts’s music is his love life. Blunts occasionally sprinkles in recurring characters that Blunts’s has had romantic feelings for, Solar and Isabel, into his songs.
Blunts’s inclusion of specific names in his various songs adds a layer of depth to the storytelling in his music. Making his music even more interesting, everything Blunts raps about is based on his real life. This leaves the listener actively interested in how the story will unfold.
Unfortunately, because Blunts’s music is based on his life, his struggles with drug use are also very real.
Struggles with Drug Use
According to podcast Gobcast, Blunts started smoking weed when he was just nine. Dave Blunts was introduced to weed by kids who were older than he was at the time, and he carried on smoking until he was 20.
While Blunts mentioned that weed was “making his music better,” he stopped smoking weed because weed was not making his life better. As stated by Blunts, he was getting high from the time he woke up to the time he went to sleep.
According to Blunts, he can no longer have any THC, a psychoactive compound found in weed, in his body because it gives him panic attacks.
In one incident, Blunts’s friend gave Blunts a vape which Blunts started to smoke. A few moments later, Blunts had a panic attack and felt his heart racing. His friend later revealed to Blunts that the vape had 0.01% THC in it.
In response to this, Blunts said to his friend, “Damn, you idiot. If I say that I’m allergic to peanuts, you can’t cut a peanut in half and say it’s just half of one,” making fun of the fact that Blunts cannot have any THC in his system and his friend believed a smaller dose would be fine.
Although Blunts never consistently started smoking weed until he was 16, he began using other drugs around that time. Blunts began taking Xanax and eventually took a liking to Lean.
While Blunts believes that he “moderates [his lean usage] kinda well,” he also funnily mentions that “every drug addict believes they moderate [their drug usage] kinda well.”
Obesity and Controversy With Snoop Dogg
Another health issue Dave Blunts has is morbid obesity. According to a few interviews, Blunts’s reported weight is around 500-600 pounds. His obesity has gotten so problematic to the point he has suffered heart failure at such a young age.
Blunts even had to require an oxygen concentrator at one point, restricting his ability to move around his house. Dedicated, Blunts also performed while attached to an oxygen tank on Juice WRLD Day 2024.
During Blunts’s performance, Blunts called out rapper Snoop Dogg. Before the performance, Snoop Dogg made fun of the fact Blunts had to perform while sitting down in one of Blunts’s concerts.
Snoop Dogg laughed and apologized for his statement saying, “Go ahead lil homie, I mean big homie. Do your thang… have your fun.”
After a few visits to the hospital, Blunts is now more focused on improving his health and lifestyle. Based on recent interviews and posts, Blunts has hired a personal trainer, and training has been going well for him.
Although Blunts has had to visit the hospital numerous times, he never let it stop him from making music. Pictured in a few of his Instagram posts, Blunts continues to record and produce music even at the hospital.
While Blunts may be able to produce music at the hospital, his health issues certainly make the process a lot more difficult. Even with Blunts working tirelessly, he had to delay his album. The album, which was slated to release on February 14th, was delayed to April 15th.
Upcoming Tour and Album Information
With the upcoming release of his album, Blunts is going on tour on April 12th. Blunts’s tour starts in Phoenix, Arizona, and ends in Santa Ana, California. Dave Blunt’s official website lists all exact tour dates and locations.
Also in the lead-up to his album release, Blunts has released three singles: Thinking of You, First Day Out The Hospital, and Balcony.
Thinking of You highlights Blunts’s loneliness after kicking out one of his ex-girlfriends, Solar. Blunts notes that he would be stupid to take her back, but he can’t help thinking about her. Blunts also mentions easing his pain with lean once again.
In First Day Out The Hospital Blunts targets Isabel, an ex-girlfriend of his who was using him for clout, and Kankan, a rapper who was disrespecting Blunts, in this song. One of Blunts’s recent Instagram posts also features one of his upcoming songs in which Blunts calls out Kankan once again. The song showcases Blunts’s controversial and humorous style of rapping which fans have come to love over the years.
Balcony is also about Blunts kicking Solar out of his house while he was at the hospital. Blunts mentions in the song that Solar was lying to one of her friends on Instagram. Solar’s lies lead to Solar’s friend threatening Blunts. Blunts calls out Solar’s friend for being scared and calling the police.
Based on the Blunts’s latest singles and posts, fans can expect to hear more of Blunts’s love life along with his usual controversial verses on his upcoming album.
With Blunts’s unapologetic bars and unmatchable presence, Blunts’s tour has fans eagerly awaiting its commencement.
