Asher Finlon has been quite busy the past year. The 20-year-old musician released his album Spree back in June 2024, and ever since, he has kept busy working on his upcoming project, Infinity Coup. The record is experimental and fully self-produced. I had the pleasure of speaking with Finlon, who was tucked away in his bedroom/studio hybrid. We discussed Asher Finlon’s Infinity Coup, pop music, and his creative process.

Leading up to the full release, Finlon had released the retro-style pop track “Shadow”, the hard-hitting dance-pop tune “Don’t Speak At All”, and “Lying Art”, his most-streamed song to date. “Lying Art” is on pace to become his first song to ever surpass 100,000 streams on Spotify.

The song was able to skyrocket his monthly listeners, pushing his music to fans across the world. During our conversation, Asher and I talked about “Lying Art” and how the most recent single made its way into the world of Infinity Coup

BH: What has the positive response to “Lying Art” been like?

AF: For the most part, really exciting, but a little bit nerve-racking. My album is mostly pop music. I was scared that I was leading people on since the album is more upbeat than that track.

BH: What does Infinity Coup mean to you?

AF: My last album came about because I was doing everything I could to be liked or be cool or successful, but Infinity Coup is about endless things coming at you and troubling you. It’s also about hating things, liking things, having fun, and endless problems.

BH: What was the most freeing process when making this album?

AF: Most of my album acts as a diary or a timestamp of where I’m at in life. This time I have more ears and eyes on me. I’m gonna be honest in the lyrics, it was freeing to write about whatever I want. It’s not a shock that I was gonna be honest and vulnerable.

Asher’s Sound

For the sake of organization, I tried to think up an artist similar to Asher’s sound but was left for minutes thinking with no success. Asher’s artistry is one of the most refreshing and exciting things to immerse yourself in. I would compare it to a sprinkling of FKA Twigs, Troye Sivan, and Shygirl, all in a blender with champagne, a pack of mint gum, and a diamond tennis bracelet, pulsing on high speed.

Infinity Coup explores topics from a longing for wealth, diving into one’s sexuality, and a night out with friends from your closest inner circle.

As far as inspirations, song ideas can come from negative things in my life, but they’re never as good as when i’m pissed off or really depressed. I like the contrast between an intense message like being poor on a pop track like Allowance.

Asher Finlon

Having had an early listen to the project, Infinity Coup is one of the best albums I have heard in a while. After listening to the LP, I feel as if I am a close friend of his. Asher Finlon’s Infinity Coup is an honest, vulnerable, and anthemic celebration of self-expression. Some of the album’s standout tracks include:

  1. “Allowance”
  2. “Proper Gander”,
  3. “Idiot Freak Anthem”
  4. “Don’t Speak At All”
  5. “Meant To Be Seen”
  6. “BROKEBOY”
  7. “Infinity Coup”

“Allowance”

This track has to be one of the next singles. Finlon sings on a Y2K-style hard-hitting pop beat. The chorus is an anthemic cry for carefree wealth. Lyrics like, “If only love and gratitude can pay me,” help drive this fed-up feeling of not being able to live the way he wants. The production is crispy, fresh, and reminiscent of an early 2000s club song.

Flashing lights, solo cups filled with cheap liquor, and a dance floor of opportunities await the listener of this song. The chorus features lyrics like, “Party scene, limousine, story for the magazine”. This illustrates this illustrious yet broke life so many young people live. With background vocals from close friend Joise, the chorus breakdown cements the power of this song. Recession pop is back and Asher Finlon has revived it.

“Don’t Speak At All”

This track embodies everything that Infinity Coup is: hard-hitting beats and meticulously produced with layers upon layers of perfectly adjusted and mixed vocals. The verses come in as if someone is whispering to you in a crowded hallway. Then the chorus jabs in with the lyrics:

I’m takin’ this cup and I’m throwin’ it down
The throat I wanna rip out to silence sound
That I make when I’m desperate
Never not headin’ to the exit
I’m takin’ this heart that hasn’t been watered
And savin’ my love before it gets slaughtered
I want you and I’m desperate
But don’t speak at all, ‘cuz you’ll ruin it

Asher showcases his vulnerabilities and self-expression through the writing on this song. The second verse is my personal favorite from the album. The delayed beat and effects in the back form the perfect sonic landscape that this track embodies.

Creative Process

Asher’s songs each have their unique strengths, but they combine to form a cohesive whole. Infinity Coup is an extension of everything he has been working towards and the creative vision he has been crafting.

BH: Is there a specific process you go through when creating a song?

AF: I like to close my eyes and think about it visually. What movie or music video would this song sound good to? Could you dance to it? It has to have components that fit every type of media I picture it in.

BH: What was the inspiration behind the cover art?

AF: This is so Incel of me, I was inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion. That anime was something I was watching while I shot this cover in November or early December. It was where I was at visually.

As we approach the January 31st release of Infinity Coup, I urge everyone to give it a listen. If you like infectious pop tracks, strong melodies, and experimental production, this album is for you. Finlon illustrates a self-expressive, relatable album front to back that audiences all around can connect with. Asher Finlon’s Infinity Coup is out on January 31st, 2025.
