There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the internet has profoundly changed the way we live in a number of ways. For the world of gaming, it is no different. It is quite interesting to see the ways in which the internet has gradually but permanently altered how gaming works, and that is what we are going to discuss today. Some of the ways that gaming has changed thanks to the online world are fairly obvious, while others are more indirect results and not so immediately clear. Let’s take a look at examples from both, and see if we can work out just what the internet has done for the world of gaming.
Walkthroughs
To put it bluntly, before the internet it was much harder to cheat. With the rise of internet forums came also the rise of the walkthrough. If you have never used one before, a walkthrough is a guide taking you through the solution for how to play a particular game. It is typically popular among games with lots of puzzles, but can apply to any, and they are often either in the form of a video or simply written. Thanks to walkthroughs, you never now need to get stuck for too long again, which has invariably changed the way that such games are made. You are much more likely to have more challenging aspects now, along with a number of hidden ‘easter eggs’ which many people won’t pick up on, in order to keep it fresh.
Ease Of Use
Something the internet always does when it touches upon anything is makes it much easier to get hold of and use. It is certainly true that the web means you can play all sorts of different games much more easily than you ever could before – and that is something that a lot of gaming fans will truly welcome with open arms. The ease of finding every kind of game under the sun, from casino slots to some of the more traditional ones, means that you never need to get bored again. If there is one major change to take away, it’s that the internet brought about a revolution in the sheer number of available games, especially once you consider the rise of independent game developers.

In-Game Purchases
Common to mobile games, in-app purchases have often been the subject of a little controversy. Clearly, many people do not like the idea of a game allowing or encouraging you to spend real money as part of its fictional world. But whatever you think of it, you have to admit that it is a huge change in the way that games are played, and it is a direct result of the rise of the internet. In-game purchases don’t seem to be disappearing any time soon, and they’re probably going to affect the playing world a lot more in the near future, so we should probably get used to them.
