In order for The Dark Knight Rises to get a PG-13 rating, one particular scene had to get cut.

It’s no lie that Christopher Nolan’s Batman films consist of darker scenes, however, it’s difficult to imagine the degree of ‘dark’ this particular voided scene was. It must’ve been pretty brutal.

Matthew Modine, who payed Deputy Police Commissioner Peter Foley, spoke on the Cinema Blend Reel Blend podcast: “[Nolan] cut my death scene out of Dark Knight Rises. Because he said it was so violent that it would have gotten an NC-17 rating.”

Modine then disclosed new information about the cut scene: “After Bane dies and Batman… gets stabbed, [Talia al Ghul] gets in one of those vehicles.

“She starts to drive away, and I’m shooting at her. And I got run over. All it does is, it just cuts, and I’m on the ground, dead.

“But it was so violent. The guy that was doubling me got hit by the car. They put a plexiglass thing on the front of [the car] and he got hit.

“They had ropes to pull him into the air, but he went up and they dropped him from about 15 feet, and the sound of his body hitting the cobblestone street in front of the New York Stock Exchange, it was sickening.”

Apparently, Nolan himself was struck by the brutality of the scene as Modine claims, “when we shot it… [Nolan’s] face was white.

“He was like, ‘OK, let’s move on. We got that.’ But it was like, ‘Oh my god, is that guy going to get up? Is he okay?’”

Another reboot was granted to the DC franchise, starring Robert Pattinson as The Batman, set to be released on October 1, 2021.

Actor Andy Serkis, who will be playing Alfred Pennyworth in the reboot, said to look out for a ‘darker, broodier’ Batman.

He added, “It’s very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written.”
