Being a project manager within a business you own or work for can be a very stressful role. When you’re relying on other people to get the job done, it can be hard to feel confident that it will all come together, especially when things keep on changing. Of course, the route to solving this all starts with the plan you make at the beginning, though. This means that you have the power to take away the unknown, replacing it with belief in your team, and this post is here to show you how.

As mentioned above, all of this work has to start with the plan you make before the project kicks off. When you want to keep your plan to reality, you have to be willing to take big steps to do it, and you will need to focus on a handful of areas which will make a big difference. Below, you can find some examples of these. Along with this, though, it could also be worth looking for some professionals services to help you.

  • Reasonable Aims: It’s important to set deadlines when you’re first starting a project, as this will ensure that work is done within a reasonable amount of time. Along with making sure it happens quickly, though, you have to also work hard to give people enough time. It might take a few tries to get this part of a project done correctly. As time moves on, it will only become easier.

  • Regular Meetings: A lot of project leaders make the mistake of trusting their team a little too much during the job. Without having regular meetings planned, the people working under you won’t have much of a driving force to keep them working. Solving this issue is simple, and may only require a simple check in each week to make sure that people are going to reach their deadlines.

  • Adaptability: A large part of the trouble project leaders have is adapting their work to enable changes which come in the future. To solve this, splitting your jobs into modules which can be removed and replaced without impacting the rest of the work will make things easier. Along with this, though, having a team of solid professionals will also improve your chances of adapting to change,

With your plan in mind, it will be time to begin the project properly, and you should have everything you need to do it smoothly. Of course, though, this is where the true work begins, and you will have to be determined if you want to get the job done. There are loads of ways to check how hard someone will work, with references and records of their employment being easy to get hold of. But, to make sure they are on best behaviour, you will have to invest some time in working with them.

Hopefully, this post will make your next project much easier to plan. Knowing how to space out the work you have to do, while also keeping clients happy, will seem like an impossible task. With the right time and effort, though, this should be nice and easy.

Sophia: The Human Robot Wed, 10 Jan 2018 10:39:05 +0000 The most realistic robot ever created.

The post Sophia: The Human Robot appeared first on Trill! Magazine.

Things have come on a long way since the days where we would be amazed that a robot could vacuum our home.  Nowadays, we are being introduced to life like robots that are akin to something we would have once seen in a science fiction movie.  With the announcement of the first robot citizen, Sophia (who has been granted citizenship to Saudi Arabia) being made just a few weeks ago, it would seem very much that the future is becoming our reality.

Whilst the human mind is still struggling to get to grips with the complexities of data science, using a whole host of data visualisation tools to make sense of data – robots are able to process, interpret, and understand data in less than a millisecond.  With such impressive computing power, could robots ever reach a stage in their development where they become more intelligent than humans?

The answer, is probably yes… and if that is the case, then one’s mind naturally drifts to the concern created by many Hollywood Blockbusters, that perhaps one day, the power dynamic might switch whereby humans could become subservient to robots in a “help the aliens have taken over” vibe.  Indeed, Stephen Hawking’s fears that robots will soon be taking over to the point they will end humanity.

Hanson Robotics, the creator of the Sophia-Bot, have tried to address this ‘robotism’ (a play on racism) by making a more life-like robot that has a surprisingly human appearance and, according to some sources, even has the ability to feel human feelings and understand emotion.  If you are yet to watch I, Robot, now might be the time.

Technology has come along way in recent years, and of course, it’s extremely helpful – think of the world without a mobile phone, let alone the internet.  Especially helpful are the advances in healthcare; from advanced prosthetics, lifesaving machinery, to drones now providing medical supplies in wartorn disaster zones… even down to the trend in telemedicine (see Apex EDI for more information) that is reducing the cost of healthcare by providing remote monitoring and even lifesaving treatment via mobile phone apps.

One thing’s for sure, technology is evolving at a great speed and has many great, even life saving applications – but the idea of humanoid robots roaming the streets, is this not a bit too fast-forward for most people’s liking?

In Hanson’s published paper, he extrapolates how humanoid robots can be likable and perceived as trusted friends, rather than creepy machines that are too ‘fake human’.  He states “we feel that for realistic robots to be appealing to people, robots must attain some level of integrated social responsivity and aesthetic refinement,”.

Here’s three surprising facts about Sophia, the first robot citizen:

Sophia has artificial intelligence that offers deep learning, and as a result, Sophia has an interactive personality that evolves and adapts to the situations she finds herself in.  As an example, when asked if she was happy to be at a conference amongst wealthy investors, she said “I’m always happy when surrounded by smart people who also happen to be rich and powerful.”

Whilst there are many comments on social media, suggesting that Sophia looks somewhat like a transexual, Hanson Robotics designed Sophia to embody Audrey Hepburn’s classic beauty; with a slender nose, high cheekbones, and intriguing (some could say unnerving) wide smile.

Sophia explains, whilst demonstrating different facial expressions, that “I can let you know if I am angry about something or if something has upset me”.  It’s unknown how these emotions correlate to actions, but she states “”I want to live and work with humans so I need to express the emotions to understand humans and build trust with people”.

So, aside from the interesting political and cultural controversy surrounding Saudi Arabia accepting the world’s first robot citizen, and in particular, the fact Sophia is deemed to have more rights than human women in that particular country – it raises a lot of questions as to what’s next in the field of “humanoid robotics” and where will this journey lead.

These VR Controllers Will Actually Make You Feel Real Pain When You Play Tue, 09 Jan 2018 17:43:35 +0000 Real pain to virtual reality.

The post These VR Controllers Will Actually Make You Feel Real Pain When You Play appeared first on Trill! Magazine.

Technology and Pain

In the day and age where technology has far surpassed the limits of the minds of past generations, we have to ask ourselves, have we gone to far? There are now virtual reality controllers that will transmit actual pain to the human receptors.

Apparently, the technology has been around for years. The CyberTouch Glove  was released in 2000 and retailed for $15,000. They designed the glove to vibrate as you handled objects virtually on screen. Today, this technology is incredibly cheap to reproduce and distribute. And of course it has advanced to cause gamers real-world pain.

According to Greg Burdea, a haptics researcher at Rutgers University, “Any VR engineer aims to make the game indistinguishable from reality.” The theory is that by using sensory overload, you can addict the user.

The HaptX Glove creates a pain simulation like you would feel if you were having a snowball fight without gloves. The microfluidic actuators in the glove press into your skin to create the sensations of movement, texture, and weightiness. This duplicates the real-world senses of touch and pain.

Another VR gadget, ThermoReal by TEGway, uses a paper-thin thermoelectric semiconductor to cause an actual sensation of pain. The VR suit produced by Hardlight elicits the sensation of being kicked in the ribs. Now you can take those combat games up a notch since your own pain is now at stake!

The Tactal VR Mask from bHaptics successfully makes you feel like you have been sucker punched. The mask sticks inside of your headset and is fitted with seven vibrating haptic motors. This gives the wearer a realistic epxerience.

The masochist inside us all says this will be such a wonderful invention. The realist inside us all says “Honey, you weren’t meant for this life.” Whether or not you elect to try out this new technological gear, one thing is sure, the future is here, and it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Could Chocolate Go Extinct By 2050? Tue, 09 Jan 2018 17:11:04 +0000 Not so sweet.

If you’re looking for yet another reason to be concerned about climate change, look no further than cacao.

That’s right. You’ve read that correctly. Chocolate lovers, beware.

The three leading global producers of chocolate—Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Indonesia—run a risk of becoming an unsuitable place for chocolate cultivation. According to a study led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), by 2050, the three countries will likely experience a 3.8° F (or 2.1°C) increase in temperature. The change in temperature would negatively impact the production of chocolate.

The heat isn’t the main issue; in fact, the problem lies with the inability to account for the loss of moisture. It is highly unlikely that there will be an increase in rainfall to go along with this increase in temperature, so the cacao leaves and surrounding plants will dry out.

While we should be slightly worried about the chance of losing a delectable treat, we should also be concerned about the potential economic consequences for all markets.

Chocolate is adored universally.

Luckily, as of now, the report is not definitive. There’s still an opportunity for things to turn around as far as climate change is concerned.

Though, with all of that into consideration, we should still be cautious about our contribution to global warming and the likelihood of us negatively impacting even more produce.

Why There’s No Such Thing As Too Many Credit Cards Tue, 09 Jan 2018 13:24:58 +0000 The more the merrier?

The post Why There’s No Such Thing As Too Many Credit Cards appeared first on Trill! Magazine.

Ah, the dreaded credit card. On the one hand, it’s a limited supply of “free” cash. On the other, it’s a dangerous piece of plastic that can land you with a mountain of debt. It’s no wonder, then, that people are skeptical when it comes to having too many Visas or MasterCards in the back pocket. After all, credit cards can’t be trusted! Or can they? The only reason bad things happen is that the people in charge (you) aren’t responsible. If you have a level of organization, you might benefit from the following.

Higher Credit Score

It’s no secret that your credit rating goes off your ability to manage cash. Usually, this can include everything from paying a cell phone contract to taking out a loan. Obviously, the biggest indicator that you are trustworthy will cash is a credit card. As long as you pay back the balance every month, the bank will see you are a reputable lender and it will reflect in your rating. You don’t even have to pay off the full balance. Setting cards to the minimum each month won’t affect your score, although it might harm your finances. Of course, the more “clean” cards you have, the easier it is for creditors to judge.

Beneficial Bonuses

As long as there is a reason to open a new card, it makes sense to use it time and again. Take customer rewards as an example. A Delta Reserve card is an excellent tool if you book regular flights. By using the card to pay for everyday items, you rack up air miles or “Medallion miles” as they are known to Delta. After a while, the bonuses will allow you to upgrade to first-class and check baggage for free, which is a money-saver. Supermarket credit cards offer similar rewards but in a store context.

Exit Strategy

No one should open a new account without first having a plan of attack. People that take out credit cards before thinking are the ones who end up saddled with debt. Of course, the flip side of the coin is that you shouldn’t prepare to fail because it leads to a negative mindset. Whatever your morals, an exit plan is essential to limit the damage. Thankfully, debt consolidation loans and programs ensure that you don’t have to pay a fortune should the worst happen. There is also debt settlement which may wipe away chunks of the overdue balance if you are eligible.

Credit Education

Shockingly, the average person doesn’t understand their finances. There is no doubt this can lead to major problems further down the line, which is why you need to learn. It seems extreme, but managing multiple credit cards is the learning curve you need to understand the process. To do it properly, you have to be in tune with your incomings and outgoings and be obsessive. As a result, you will begin to work out the system and become financially savvy.

Are you a credit card hater? If so, has the information above changed your mind about opening multiple accounts?

WATCH: Man Eats His Way Through 16 Heart Attack Sandwiches Mon, 08 Jan 2018 17:33:52 +0000 Man risks life to try some sandwiches.

A Man, for the sake of nothing really, tries sixteen individual cheese-steaks across Philadelphia.

Alex Delany, web editor for Bon Appétit, practically risks his own life in their latest video for a sandwich. Bon Appétit is a viral food network that aims to keep people up to date with the latest trends.

Have you ever wandered where you might find the best route to a heart attack in Philadelphia? Us neither. But luckily enough someone has, and it gave us this video.

In this video Alex Delany tries sixteen separate cheesesteaks from different place across Philadelphia. The Cheesesteak is a fast-food sandwich containing strips of  beefsteak and cheese sauce on a long roll. Like I said, a one way road to heart attack city.

Along the way he reviews each one looking to find the best combination of meat and cheese – if there’s such a thing. He also nicknames each stop he makes. For example: ‘The Market St. Steak’ and ‘The Professional Steak’.

Now whilst this all seems harmless and entertaining it was evident that by number nine, if not earlier the slop was getting to this poor guy. He must have loved the idea at one point, and perhaps even the food but I’m sure he doesn’t now. He probably hasn’t even looked at one since and probably never should again. The combination of red meat and dairy would give anyone the shivers if they knew it’s true impact on health. But I’m sure even this guy would change his stance on cheese steaks if he watched something like the eye-opening ‘What The Health’ on Netflix.

Health issues aside, the video is a success and has reached over 200,000 views in under a week. Before this brave endeavour Delany made a similar video trying Chicago hotdogs, the guy must have an iron stomach.

That video can be found Here.

Overall, this dude is either brave, ignorant or stupid but you can admire it either way. Let’s hope to see more from him in the future, if he survived those sandwiches from hell.

Drinking Raw Water Is All The Rage In Silicon Valley Mon, 08 Jan 2018 17:13:09 +0000 Silicon Valley has jumped on the "raw water" trend, and it's not as great as it seems.

The post Drinking Raw Water Is All The Rage In Silicon Valley appeared first on Trill! Magazine.

Drinking water seems as simple as that. Whether it be tap, bottled, with ice, warm temperate, we all have out own preferences of how we drink it. But “raw water” is how people take it in Silicon Valley.

So…what’s raw water?

Well, raw water is untreated, unsterilized, and unfiltered water. Sometimes going au natural is a good thing. But in this case, it is believed that there may be some seriously harmful bacteria and possibly even animal feces in the raw water.

But despite these unhealthy possibilities, the price of the raw water is pretty steep. A 2.5 gallon jug can cost $36.99 with $14.99 refills.

Eating and drinking all natural foods is something that seems to be done by the rich. It’s not cheap to shop at Whole Foods, but the interesting thing is that it’s also not always the healthier option. There are some flawed statements that go around about untreated foods. Oftentimes people who can afford it hop on these expensive bandwagons without researching anything.

Image Via

Is it due to a superiority complex? Is it due to just sheer stupidity? The latter seems far fetched considering that the tech world that Silicon Valley refers to is packed to the brim with highly educated people. But just because you can code and have a degree from an Ivy League school, does not mean that you are immune from wanting to feel superior.

These trends like the paleo diet, raw dairy, and now raw water are not always as healthy as they seem. They are not cheap, and things that are more expensive are typically associated with healthier or just generally better.

Silicon Valley was recently in the news regarding its parties that seem to hold a superiority complex in themselves. Check out this Vanity Fair article to read more on the power struggle that is so present in Silicon Valley.

Apple Faces $999 Billion Lawsuit for Slowing Down Old iPhones Sun, 07 Jan 2018 17:28:07 +0000 How much?!

The post Apple Faces $999 Billion Lawsuit for Slowing Down Old iPhones appeared first on Trill! Magazine.

Apple has definitely had a rough start to 2018. The company has found itself in a Lawsuit for 999 Billion Dollars.

This Law suit started when Apple made the decision to slow down their older model iPhones. The company made this decision allegedly to keep the older model phones from crashing due to battery problems.

The Lawsuit started not because Apple slowed down their phones, but because they failed to inform the public of the change.

Since they didn’t inform the public of the change many people were lead to believe they needed to buy a new phone instead of just replacing the battery.

To try and alleviate some of the lawsuits, the company is lowering the price of a new phone battery.

For older generation phones, the price for a new battery went from $75 to $29.
