Well, with my tattoos it looks like my dream of starring in a chinese soap opera is dead *sob*. The ban comes about after rapper GAI from Hunan TV’s Singer, was removed from the show. Singer is a talent show kind of like a Chinese version of the X-factor or pop idol where mediocre singers (Probably, you’ve seen pop idol right?) compete to perform at an end of season concert with the hopes of securing a record deal.

GAI, real name Zhou Yan, was also removed from Hunan TV’s official YouTube with no official explanation. However, he can still be seen in the shows trailer.

The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China or the acronym (S.A.P.P.R.F.T) for short (WTF? Couldn’t they think of anything shorter?) said this on Sina, a Chinese news outlet.

(The administration) “specifically requires that programs should not feature actors with tattoos [or depict] hip hop culture, sub-culture (non-mainstream culture) and dispirited culture (decadent culture).”

Gao Changli of *deep breath*, The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China outlined the four “don’ts” that Chinese media must now abide by.

“Absolutely do not use actors whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble.

Absolutely do not use actors who are tasteless, vulgar and obscene.

Absolutely do not use actors whose ideological level is low and have no class.

Absolutely do not use actors with stains, scandals and problematic moral integrity.”

So, if you’ve got some sweet ink and like your trousers to sit below your ass revealing your underwear, you’re s**t out of luck if you dreamt of winning a Chinese reality show. Move on, try South Korea perhaps? I’d say try North but, ahem, you know. In the meantime, have a gander at this….
